  • i hate fruit flies

Unfortunately for us...some of that wonderful organic produce was infected (being pesticide free) and they have now tried to take over my apartment.

    gross.  the war is on.

    simple fruit fly trap

we have one of these in every room.  they work suprisingly well.

the creepiest thing about the critters?
red eyes and little legs. EW!

makes you miss their bigger more commonplace cousins.
Anyone else have a run in with these buggers?  We would definitely appreciate any tips and methods of ridding them from our lives.  THANKS!

  • skate club

anyone else interested in getting re-acquainted with inline skating?  i am.
i remember rollerskating being fun and then my first pair of in line skates as a pre-teen was revolutionarily freeing.  I had so much fun blading through suburbia with my sister.  i guess that's why i am eager to get back in touch with skating. it's exercise and it's fun.

I bought a new pair last month.  they're awesome and better than before. and eager to skate again.
Now I just need a skate buddy and maybe once we practice and get to the point where we can stop and turn with ease on the streets again, we can join the skate club someday. haha.

let me know if you'd be interested!  and if you're a couple that's cool. i'll tag along and gush and even take photos of you and your hunny blading in the Palace of Fine Arts dome so you can capture your love and fun together. hehe.  or if you just are single and end up finding a date that's down to go with...i'd take your photos too! haha. (hey the Bay Guardian actually voted the Palace of Fine Arts Dome the best rollerderby date spot.
and  i just wanna go. at the very least to watch cute roller couples and to skate in the dome. = P

    Invasion of the Rollerbladers

Mob of skaters takes city by storm weekly

    BY SAM WHITING

On a foggy Friday night, Dan Cunningham and Phyllis White are sharing a
bottle of red beneath the Palace of Fine Arts dome. They have with them a wrapped birthday
present and a sleeping bag. At 9:20, the first inline skater arrives like a scout for a
    swarm of killer bees.

Another body on wheels rolls out of the dark, then another, and all at once there are
62 skaters whipping around the circle with arms linked in a long snake. "What is
this," asks Cunningham, "roller derby night?"

        FNSInvasion1993.jpg (136834 bytes)

Then as quickly as the swarm appeared, it vanishes into the
night toward the next appointed round.

"At first it seemed like a science fiction
movie or something," says a surprised White. "We're not really part of it, but
we're engulfed in it," adds Cunningham, who may have been touched by the wine.
"We wouldn't have missed it for the world."

Neither would the loosely organized group of skaters, a hodgepodge of styles and skill
levels, who depart the Ferry Building at 8:30 each Friday night to spend three intense
hours coursing 12.5 miles of frenzied street.

FNSInvasion2.jpg (47233 bytes) "We're pretty much Friday night heathens. We just
overrun the city," explains Lori Solay, 27, who is in furniture sales and is wearing
cutoffs and a short-sleeve lavender top. Once they get going, the chill isn't a factor.
Adrenaline and pumping limbs take care of that.

"It's a nice deviation from going
out and drinking Friday nights, what every-body else does," says Solay. And the
people who do what everybody else does show their support by hooting from the street
corners and saloons along Chestnut Street, the Bermuda Triangle and over the hills and
through the tunnels to South of Market.

    Better Than Bars

It's better than going to the bars, and you meet people with with the
    same

interests" says Alexandria Ross, 22 who
works for Clorox. "Going to a bar, you have no idea what kind of people they
    are."

Pedestrians and motorists along the route are equally unsure what kind of
people the skaters are, other than something to be avoided like a stampede of bulls.

"I've never seen anything like this," says Minnesotan Bill Creswell, who is
strolling by Union Square when the skaters come swooping down the steps, just before 11
p.m. "It's not what I expected, but this is the big city."

The Friday night skate used to be on Thursdays, but apparently "The Simpsons"
is big with in-line types. So it found a niche on the weekend and has become renowned
enough to attract Jon Lowden, 30, editor at large of InLine Magazine, in Boulder, Cob.

"This is one of the more legendary group skates in the country because of the
terrain," says Lowden, a top-rated racer. "The average San Francisco skater has
a little more lead in his pencil."

San Francisco isn't the only Bay Area skating hot spot. Nighttime skaters can also be
found patrolling the streets of Los Gatos, Walnut Creek and Stanford University.

In San Francisco the skaters sharpen up In the parking lot across from the

Ferry Building, as organizer David Miles, 37,
opens his van and cranks up a music-like sound that Yeltsin might have used to clear out
    the parliament

"It's like running a marathon with a group of people", explains
Michael Johnson, 29, a Charles Schwab rep who dresses in grunge with unbuttoned flannel,
cutoff jeans and tights. "It's a mob mentality."

Most wear fluorescent glow sticks on their skates or flashing reflector lights on their
belts. Miles, founder and president of the Outdoor Roller Skating Association of America,
is distinguished by a blinking headband. He lurks behind the group like the ski patrol,
picking up strays as they head north along the Embarcadero toward Pier 39. Speeds can
reach 35 to 40 miles per hour.

"The first night I wasn't sure I was going to make it," says Lenny Brandriet,
a cahhie, "but they take real good care of the new people."

After looping Pier 39, they skate through the heart of Fisherman's Wharf, playing cat
and mouse with the feared "yellow jackets" - taxicabs. At Aquatic Park, they
cross into Fort Mason and travel along the Marina Green past the Exploratorium to the
Palace of Fine Arts. Moving around and through traffic, they can make it down congested
Chestnut Street and up Fillmore to Union faster than any car.

"It's a feeling of being empowered," explains John Seely, 57, an Oakland
writer and translator. "The street suddenly belongs to you."

At 9:45 they reach City Pantry on Fillmore, and fill up on Snapple and candy bars. The
    clerks pretend not to notice.

"I don't think those guys in the store like us. I think they are waiting for
someone to go through the display case", says Brandriet
. "But on the other hand, we're worth a quick hundred bucks."

    Cruising the Tunnel

After clogging the sidewalks and benches along Union, they skate up to Polk Street,
turn right and then left at Johnny Love's, and rip Broadway to "Hell on Wheels,"
a.k.a. Helen Wills Playground. They circle the basketball court, playing tag, jumping and
spinning. When the park lights dim at 10, they head for the highlight of the evening - the
    Broadweay Tunnel

"Going through the tunnel is pure extasy"says Leely. The
elevated pedestrian walkway to the tunnel, which crosses beneath four city blocks allows
no room to turn or stop.

"It's a bobsled run. All downhill," says Johnson. "You
hear your feet and feel the vibration. The cars coming through and the horns blowing. It's
    a rush."

It is also illegal to skate on any sidewalk, according to San Francisco police
spokesman David Ambrose. An officer could require them to pull off their skates and sock
hop through the tunnel. This would dampen the fun considerably, but it hasn't happened
    yet.

At the east end of the tube they regroup. "A couple of people fell, but I didn't
see no blood," says Miles. "Nobody was hurt."

Then they pass through Chinatown to a run at the Stockton tunnel. If the southbound
light is green, they'll wait until it turns red. With no traffic approaching from behind,
the skaters bolt through as if there were a land grab, reaching the other end before the
light can turn and the cars catch them.

After that race, they feel entitled to a little spree In Union
Square, leaping police barricades, even lying down to jump one another like barrels.

"If ever see you down here again, you better have a permit," says one angry
man who did not appreciate the disruption.

"We monopolize a lot of stuff," admits Brandriet, "but it's for 10
    minutes a week."

    Through the Club District

They continue down Powell to Market, then west six long crosstown blocks to 11th, down
through the nightclubs to the fashion center and across town to the Beale Street Bar &
    Grill.

"Any place that will let us in, we go in," says computer specialist Steve
    Howe, 30.

By 11:30, they are home in their parking lot, 12.5 miles on the legs hut they need
more, spinning in circles until 1 a.m.

"Jump, skate, dance to the music," says Miles. "It's almost like being
    in the park."

By Saturday "you feel great," says Johnson. "Tired, but it's a healthy
tired. Not a bar tired." Which leaves ju'st enough time to rest for the big Sunday
    scene in Golden Gate Park.

  • From the ever sweet and worldly MeoWSmilE something we can all related to...us quarter life-ers.

    BEING TWENTY N SOMETHING

    got this from a friend....

    BEING
TWENTY-SOMETHING... They call it the "Quarter-life Crisis." It is when
you stop going along with the crowd and start realizing that there are
many things about yourself that you didn't know and may not like. You
start feeling insecure and wonder where you will be in a year or two,
but then get scared because you barely know where you are now. You
start realizing that people are selfish and that, maybe, those friends
that you thought you were so close to aren't exactly the greatest
people you have ever met, and the people you have lost touch with are
some of the most important ones. What you don't recognize is that they
are realizing that too, and aren't really cold, catty, mean or
insincere, but that they are as confused as u. You look at your
job...and it is not even close to what you thought you would be doing,
or maybe you are looking for a job and realizing that you are going to
have to start at the bottom and that scares you. Your opinions have
gotten stronger. You see what others are doing and find yourself
judging more than usual because suddenly you realize that you have
certain boundaries in your life and are constantly adding things to
your list of what is acceptable and what isn't. One minute, you are
insecure and then the next, secure. You laugh and cry with the greatest
force of your life. You feel alone and scared and confused. Suddenly,
change is the enemy and you try and cling on to the past with dear
life, but soon realize that the past is drifting further and further
away, and there is nothing to do but stay where you are or move
forward. You get your heart broken and wonder how someone you loved
could do such damage to you. Or you lay in bed and wonder why you can't
meet anyone decent enough that you want to get to know better. Or maybe
you love someone but love someone else too and cannot figure out why
you are doing this because you know that you aren't a bad person. One
night stands and random hook ups start to look cheap. Getting wasted
and acting like an idiot starts to look pathetic. You go through the
same emotions and questions over and over, and talk with your friends
about the same topics because you cannot seem to make a decision. You
worry about loans, money, the future and making a life for
yourself.....and while winning the race would be great, right now you'd
just like to be a contender! What you may not realize is that everyone
    reading this relates to it.

We are in our best of times and our worst of times, trying as hard as we can to figure this whole thing out.

  • In dedication to Brian and Jayden Chin

A friend passed away recently, Brian Chin.

Even though I was a friend to Brian and his brother Daniel mostly through my sister Janet.  They were both always very kind to me.  Janet was very close with both of them and I had often admired the strength and sincerity of their friendships with one another.  They were true friendships that were without judgements and were full of understanding in the way that we all hope real friendships could be.

And though I may not have gotten to know Daniel or Brian as much as Janet knows them, all of my thoughts and well wishes go to them and their family.  As does a donation to help their family in their time of need.

The tragedies that have stricken their family is heart wrenching, especially now with the passing of Brian, I ask all of you to please read their story as told through their older brother, Royce's friend korean_superman, Jeff as I am at a loss of words to even put together any sort of meaningful explanation to this senseless tragedy.

And if you have a few dollars to spare, please make a donation to the Brian Chin fund so that Brian can get the funeral he deserves and so that his newbord Jayden can have a full life.

    Thank you.
May you find Heaven to be a much brighter place Brian. RIP.

socializing with friends at a cafe in Koreatown, when they were

away. The group of suspects, comprised of 9 male Asians, followed them
to a parking lot at Chapman Plaza located at 6th Street and Alexandria
Avenue. The suspects, armed with mace and knives, attacked Chin and his

    ========

    Dear Friends,

As some of you may know, Brian Chin, a childhood friend of ours, was viciously murdered last weekend in
    Los Angeles.
Brian was mercilessly stabbed to death in a parking lot as he was
walking back to his car from a cafe.   Brian leaves behind a one-week
old baby boy, his family and his friends.

    To
make matters more difficult, Brian's family is still recovering
emotionally, physically and financially from the death of their father
just two months ago.   Royce, Brian's brother, has informed us that his
family is struggling to gather funds to provide Brian with a decent
funeral.  We reach out to you now and humbly ask for your help.   We
ask that you donate to the memorial fund that has been established for
the benefit of Brian.  The information for the memorial fund, in
addition to alternate methods of making a donation, can be found below.
There is no donation too small.  Even the smallest amount will mean a
    lot.

    In
addition to the donations, you can also help by aiding us in the search
of the cowards who committed this cruel, vicious act.   Any information
pertaining to the events of that night or the identity of the murderers
or their accomplices will help bring them to justice.   More details
about the murder can be found in the letter written by Royce below, and
also in the LAPD news release following that.  Please, ask your friends
and acquaintances if they or anyone they know were in the area late
    Friday night/early Saturday morning.

    Lastly,
you can help by keeping Brian and his family in your thoughts and
prayers.  We thank you for reading this letter and encourage you to
pass it along to family and friends.   Please stay safe.

    Sincerely,

    Eugene Choi and Joonsik Maing

To all my brothers and sisters,

My name is Royce Chin and over the weekend my brother, Brian Chin was senselessly stabbed to death over the weekend.  With
the illness of my father, it was hard to watch my mother care for a man
that was like Superman to me my whole life until the past two years.  I witnessed painfully as she took did everything to take care of him the last two years.  My
father beat death twice in his life, but an oversight by a careless
doctor proved to be too much, and we painfully buried our loving dad
    two months ago.

During this whole time, my brother did all he could, never complaining about the responsibilities thrown his way.  He
encouraged me to start my life, and that he would take care of
everything back at home and watch my mother that cried everyday in pain
from the loss of the husband she loved unconditionally.  Because of his selfless sacrifice, I was able to get married and start my life in San Diego this past year.

On 7/05/06, Brian had a baby boy.  Brian, my mother and sister came down to southern California to see his brand new baby one week after.  He had promised to take care of some church kids during the weekend and he was not able to come right away.  This past Friday night, he went out with some friends to Koreatown in L.A. to celebrate the birth of his son Jayden.

Upon shortly sitting down at a caf called Blink in the early morning hours of 7/15/06, there was a confrontation that ensued behind where Brian was sitting.  After
trying to warn the people to stop slamming into them, a friend sitting
next to Brian decided to stand up and diffuse the two guys.  Brian stood up and pulled the friend away after an exchange, where they proceeded to exit.

Once outside, they were confronted with a guy perpetrating as if he had a gun.  Brian and two friends wrestled away the weapon, which ended up being a crowbar.  Shortly after, they proceeded to walk to their cars two blocks away where they were followed into a parking lot.  The 5 or so that were following turned into 9-15 guys where they cowardly maced two friends that were with Brian.  As Brian was defending off the group of guys after him, everyone of the cowards put their focused on him.  As if being outnumbered was not enough, they brutally stabbed him in the back and front over and over again 16+ times.  All I see when I close my eyes now is my brother being stabbed over and over again, and what his last thoughts may have been.  Probably of his newborn son, and the family he would leave behind.

There is a void in my
heart and the sadness and pain I feel is indescribable. Brian was truly
a fearless person, always there for me and his friends.  Ive
know him his whole life of 27 years, and there was never a moment where
I felt things could not be accomplished with him by my side.  These punks robbed me of my brother, and robbed his friends of a truly unique person.  I
ask for prayers, information possibly leading to the capture of these
cowards, and donations, so I can give my brother a just and proper
funeral.  You can contact me at Royce.Chin@yahoo.com .  I thank everyone for their support.

Tina Fey to leave Saturday Night Live

Last Updated Sun, 23 Jul 2006 11:01:51 EDT

Tina Fey, the head writer for Saturday Night Live, says she is quitting her duties at the sketch comedy show to focus on her new primetime series, 30 Rock.

Comedian Tina Fey, head writer for Saturday Night Live, will be leaving the show to concentrate on her new NBC series. (Canadian Press)

Tina Fey, head writer for Saturday Night Live, will be leaving the show
to concentrate on her new NBC series. (Canadian Press)

Fey, whose new show will air on NBC this fall, made the announcement during a Friday night appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

There had been months of speculation about whether Fey, 36, would keep up her duties at Saturday Night Live (SNL ) as head writer and co-anchor of the show's news parody "Weekend Update."

    The  comedian first joined SNL
as a writer in 1997 and became head writer two years later. She joined
Jimmy Fallon on "Weekend Update" in 2000 and kept it going when Amy
    Poehler replaced Fallon in 2004.

"I'm going to go nuts," said Fey when asked about her new show, where she will be writing, starring and executive producing.

30 Rock goes behind the scenes of a show that has parallels to SNL.
Fey, taking a cue from her own life, plays the head writer of a comedy
series called "The Girly Show." SNL veterans Tracy Morgan and Rachel
Dratch, who is also leaving SNL, will play cast members.

    Speaking
to television critics in Pasadena, Calif., on Saturday at the annual
preview of fall shows, Fey indicated juggling so many responsibilities
made her feel as if a "train was about to hit me."

Lorne Michaels, the executive producer of 30 Rock and SNL, said he was not happy about Fey's departure. "Tina disappearing is a huge hole in the writing staff."

30 Rock also stars Alec Baldwin as Fey's network boss.

Perhpas my favorite thing about SNL will now be gone.

guess i'll have to check out 30 Rock

  • Craigslist posters robbed at gunpoint in Walnut Creek

    Bay City News

    Monday, July 17, 2006

    (07-17) 04:36 PDT WALNUT CREEK --
An advertisement on the Craigslist.org Web site led to an armed

robbery in a Walnut Creek Target store parking lot Sunday night, Lt. Mark

Covington of the Walnut Creek Police Department reported.

According to Covington, the victims, who were from the

Livermore-Pleasanton area, posted some hooded jackets for sale on the Web

site. They arranged to meet with the suspects to sell the jackets at the

Walnut Creek Target store at 1871 N. Main St.

At about 8:20 p.m. the two suspects, both Asian males about 16 to

19 years old, arrived in the parking lot in a black Lexus. One of the

suspects then pulled a silver handgun and pointed it at one of the victims,

reportedly saying "This is how we're going to do this.''

As the suspects made off with 11 jackets, they flashed a gang sign

and said, "This is West Pittsburg,'' according to Covington.

The suspects left in the Lexus and were last seen driving out of

the south driveway of the Target store, Covington said.

The first suspect, who was the driver, was described as 5 feet 6

inches tall, 130 pounds, and was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and a

    gold "grill.''

The second suspect was described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 145 to

150 pounds, and was wearing a white ball cap with the word "Vietnamese'' on

it and a white T-shirt. He carried a silver semi-automatic handgun with brown

    grips.

The suspects' vehicle was described as a black Lexus four-door

    with paper plates.

No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing and police

have not yet located the suspects, Covington said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Walnut Creek Police

    Department at (925) 943-5844.

In an apparently unrelated incident approximately three weeks ago,

San Jose police reported a series of armed robberies by a suspect posing as a

seller or buyer on the Craigslist.org Web site.

That suspect was described a black man between the ages of 18 and

25, standing 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, weighing between 140 to 160

pounds with a "thin but muscular build.''
